Authorities say 35-year-old Edward Benn of Johnson City was charged with first-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.

Investigators say Benn made a purchase at the Mirabito store at 120 Baldwin Street around 1 p.m. Wednesday.

A clerk called police about an hour later after she suspected the $50 bill Benn used was fake. Officers took a close look at it and determined it was counterfeit.

Police used surveillance video to identify Benn. They took him into custody a short time later at his residence on Roberts Street.

Benn was found to be in possession of a small amount of marijuana. He was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana. He was arraigned in Johnson City village court and sent to Broome County Jail.
