Snow Tracks Expose Windsor Man In Chenango Break-In Attempt

A burglary call in the Town of Chenango turned into a straightforward but unusual investigation after Broome County Sheriff’s deputies followed a clear set of footprints in the snow. What started as a routine alarm activation ended with a Windsor man facing felony charges.

Deputies Respond to Burglary Alarm on Russell Road

Around 6 p.m. on December 9 p.m., deputies were sent to a home on Russell Road after a burglar alarm went off. When they arrived, it was immediately obvious that something had happened. The back door appeared to have been forced open, and deputies went inside to make sure no one was still in the home.

Fresh Footprints Lead Deputies Across the Property

After confirming the house was empty, deputies began checking the outside of the home. That’s when they noticed a set of fresh footprints in the snow leading away from the back of the property toward a nearby creek. With no other tracks in sight, deputies followed the prints to see where they led.

Suspect Identified Through Boot Prints and Admission

A short distance from the home, deputies found a man walking in the area. He was identified as 42-year-old Scott A. Evanchof of Windsor. Investigators compared his boots to the prints in the snow and found they matched. Evanchof later admitted to deputies that he had attempted to break into the residence.

Felony Charges Filed After Investigation

Based on the evidence, Evanchof was charged with Burglary in the 2nd Degree, a Class C felony, and Criminal Mischief in the 3rd Degree, a Class E felony. The charges stem from both the attempted entry and the damage found at the home.

Suspect Arraigned and Released Pending Court Date

Evanchof was arraigned at Central Arraignment Part and was remanded to the Broome County Correctional Facility, where he remains in custody.
