Legendary Yankees Broadcaster John Sterling Dies at 87
If you're a New York Yankee fan, what name pops into your head first? Is it Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, if you're younger, it'll probably be Derek Jeter? NOT ME! The first thing that comes to my mind is...John Sterling.

Most likely it's because I've dreamed of being a sports broadcaster on the radio. If I could have done half the job that Sterling did, I would be a huge success. He told it like he saw it, even if it wasn't necessarily a positive Yankee comment. He was a breath of fresh air on the radio.
If you're not familiar with Sterling, his voice was one of those you just recognized right away. Unfortunately, that voice is gone. Sterling has died at the age of 87, according to WFAN Sports Radio.
A Long Career Behind the Mic
Sterling spent decades calling Yankees games. He joined the broadcast team in 1989 and stayed with it until 2024. Over the years, he called more than 5,000 regular season games and over 200 postseason games.
He Rarely Missed a Game
One of the most impressive things about Sterling was his consistency. For years, he barely missed a single game. In fact, he once called more than 5,000 games in a row before finally taking a short break in 2019. That kind of streak is unheard of in sports broadcasting.
More Than Just Baseball
While most people know him for the Yankees, Sterling’s career was much bigger than that. He worked in radio and sports broadcasting for decades, covering basketball, football, and hockey at different points. But it was baseball where he became a legend.
A Lasting Legacy in New York Sports
Sterling retired in 2024 after more than 30 years with the Yankees. By that point, he had become part of the team’s identity for many fans. For generations of listeners, he wasn’t just calling the game, he was part of the experience.
A Voice That Won’t Be Forgotten
Losing someone like John Sterling feels personal for a lot of fans. His voice was there for big moments, everyday games, and everything in between. And even though he’s gone, for many people including me, that voice will always be tied to Yankees baseball.
