It looks like this time they REALLY mean it as the Real ID requirement is set to begin by 2025. What does this mean for you?  Let's find out so you can keep your travel plans in place in the coming year.

What's the Buzz?

The Real ID requirement is back and it's the government's way of saying, "It's time to upgrade your driver's license and ID!" Beginning on May 7, 2025, if you don't have a Real ID, you better have an alternate form of acceptable ID if you're looking to fly on a domestic flight or go into a federal building.

The Lowdown on Real ID

Real ID is a beefed-up form of ID that meets federal security standards. When you apply for or renew your driver's license or state ID, this will help with the identity verification process.. This program will make sure that everyone has a valid ID when it comes to air travel and  getting into certain federal buildings.

Preparing for the Change

Don't panic just yet, you've got some time to get yourself ready. However, as we all know, time flies by so it's not a bad idea to prepare yourself now. If you're due to get a license or ID renewal, it's not a bad idea to upgrade to the Real ID version.

You need to get the right documents together before you go to the DMV. We're talking about your birth certificate, Social Security card, and proof of residency.

Are There Exceptions?

There are always some fine-print situations. Anyone under the age of 18 won’t have to show Real ID to travel. If you're not planning on flying or visiting a federal facility, then this Real ID thing won't affect you as much...but how often does that really happen?
