
Owego Free Academy FFA Team Earns 2nd Place at New York State Livestock Evaluation Contest
The Owego Free Academy FFA Livestock Evaluation Team has a big reason to celebrate. The team placed 2nd overall at the New York State Livestock Evaluation Contest, held at the New York State Fair in Syracuse. Their strong showing earned them a spot to represent New York at the Eastern States Exposition, better known as the Big E, in Springfield, Massachusetts, later this fall.
Owego Stands Out in Statewide Livestock Evaluation Competition
The contest drew 20 schools and 53 students from across the state, all testing their knowledge and skills in evaluating livestock for both market and breeding quality. It was a highly competitive event, and Owego’s team stood out for their preparation, dedication, and teamwork.
Owego Students Achieve High Individual Rankings
Two team members also earned top honors. Mason Hill placed 2nd overall individually, a remarkable achievement in such a large field of competitors. Mikayla Wilbur also performed strongly, placing 8th overall and helping to secure the team’s outstanding finish.

Owego Student Reflects on Team’s Success and Growth
Reflecting on the experience, Mikayla Wilbur shared, “I’m extremely proud of my team. It was a great learning experience, which allowed us to learn more about the livestock industry.” Her words capture both the pride and the educational value of competing at this level.
Owego FFA Sets Sights on Next Year’s Success
Although the team will not be able to compete at the Big E this year due to unforeseen circumstances, the accomplishment marks an important milestone for Owego’s FFA chapter. The success has energized the students and strengthened their commitment to future competitions. They are already preparing for next year with the goal of building on this momentum.
