Critical Weather Warning: Severe Storms To Hit New York

The storm is moving from Ohio toward the mid-Atlantic. The impact will be felt along the Interstate 70, 80, and 90 corridors. Affected states include Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and West Virginia.

AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Matt Benz indicates that the severity is substantial despite limited area coverage. Areas to the east and south of the Pennsylvania/New York border should stay alert as conditions may worsen into the evening.

Residents should seek shelter immediately at the first sign of approaching storms. Expect strong wind gusts between 50-60 mph, with potential peaks up to 70 mph (near hurricane force). Be aware of the potential for hail up to golf ball size and the possibility of isolated tornadoes.

National Weather Service Alert

There is a strong risk of severe thunderstorms later today across the Twin Tiers and NEPA, between 3:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. A storm line will progress across Central New York and Northeast Pennsylvania later this afternoon and evening.

Central New York and NEPA are under a level 3 out of 5 Enhanced Risk for severe storms. The primary threat is damaging winds, with hail over one inch being a serious but secondary threat. The National Weather Service says that an isolated tornado or two cannot be ruled out during this storm.
