New York Ranks Among Safest States for Workplace Injuries
A new study has some good news for people living and working in New York. The state ranks near the bottom of a new list of the most dangerous states for everyday injuries. In this case, being near the bottom is a good thing.
New York Has a Low Injury Risk Score
New York ranked 49th out of all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Only New Hampshire and Rhode Island had lower scores. New York received an injury risk score of 18.5 out of 100. A higher score means a state has a greater risk of workplace injuries and deaths.
New York Recorded 217 Workplace Deaths
The study found that 217 people died from workplace injuries in New York during 2024. That equals 1.09 workplace deaths for every 100,000 New York residents. The study also looked at serious injuries in private workplaces. These were injuries that caused workers to miss work, take on lighter duties or move to another position. New York reported 1.1 of these cases for every 100 full-time workers.
What the New York Ranking Really Means
The study does not include every type of personal injury. The main ranking is based on workplace deaths and serious workplace injuries. Dog-related insurance claims were listed separately and were not used to calculate New York’s final score.

New York Earns a Low Injury Risk Score
New York received an overall risk score of 18.5 out of 100. A score closer to 100 means a state had a higher risk. Only New Hampshire and Rhode Island received lower scores. However, those two states did not provide nonfatal workplace injury data. New York did provide data in every category used to create the main ranking.
