Across the country, fewer people are packing up and moving than ever before. A new study shows the national moving rate is just 11 percent, which is the lowest on record. In New York, the rate is even lower at 8.5 percent. That makes New York one of the least mobile states in the country, meaning most people are staying right where they are.

Some New York Cities Are Still Seeing Lots of Moves

Even though the state as a whole is staying put, some cities tell a different story. Places like Syracuse, Rochester, and Schenectady have much higher turnover. In Syracuse, more than 20 percent of residents moved within a year. Rochester was close behind at nearly 17 percent, and Schenectady was just under 15 percent.

Why So Many New Yorkers Are Staying Put

There are a few reasons people may not be moving as much. High home prices, higher interest rates, and the cost of moving itself can make staying in place feel like the safer choice.

For renters and homeowners alike, giving up a decent rent or a low mortgage rate can be hard, especially when new housing costs are much higher than they were a few years ago.

What This Means for Local Communities

When fewer people move, neighborhoods can become more stable, with neighbors staying longer. That can be a good thing for schools, small businesses, and community groups.

A State of Movers and Stayers

This study shows that New York is a mix of both. Many residents are staying put, but certain cities are still seeing new arrivals. For New Yorkers, that means the story of where people live is not the same everywhere. While some towns feel settled, others are growing in new ways.

What to Take From the Numbers

If it feels like your neighborhood has not changed much, the data says you are probably right. Most New Yorkers are choosing to stay where they are. But if you live in or near cities like Syracuse, Rochester, or New Rochelle and it feels like new people are always moving in, that is true too.
