Electric bills are a big part of household budgets in New York, and a new study suggests some residents may be paying more than they need to each month. A nationwide analysis looked at electricity costs across all 50 states and found that the type of payment plan a household uses could make a noticeable difference in the final bill.

Plan Type Can Affect Your Monthly Bill

The research compared prepaid electricity plans with traditional monthly billing plans. Using federal energy data and standard household energy use, the study estimated what people might pay under each type of plan.

For New York households, the results show that some residents could save about $50.40 per month depending on the type of electricity plan they use. That puts New York eighth in the nation for possible savings tied to plan choice alone.

Traditional Plans Often Lead to Higher Bills

The study also found that people using traditional billing plans are more likely to see higher electricity bills. About 27 percent of those customers paid more than $200 per month for electricity. By comparison, only 5 percent of people using prepaid electricity plans had bills reaching that level.

Researchers also found that unexpected bills happen more often with traditional plans. About 22 percent of traditional plan users said their monthly bill is higher than expected, while just 6 percent of prepaid users said the same thing.

What This Could Mean for New York Residents

With inflation and rising utility costs affecting household budgets, electricity prices are becoming a bigger concern. The type of billing plan you choose may play a role in how much you pay each month. For some households, exploring different electricity plan options could lead to bigger savings over time.
