Learning to drive can be an exciting adventure, I remember teaching my daughter to drive and it was very adventurous. One thing to remember while learning to drive is to follow the  New York State laws. You need to know where it's illegal to practice driving if you want to avoid legal problems.

Learner Permit Restrictions

No matter how old you are, if you have a learner's permit in New York State, make sure you drive with a supervisor that is 21 or older. This supervisor must have a valid driver's license for the vehicle you're using. If you're learning to ride a motorcycle, your helper needs to have a motorcycle license.

Restricted Areas

You need to know the places where you are not allowed to learn to drive, including some New York parks and bridges.

New York City Parks – It doesn't matter whether it's Central Park or Prospect Park; driving with a learner permit is illegal in ALL New York City parks.

Tri-borough Bridge and Tunnel Authority Bridges/Tunnels – There's no driving with a learners permit on any bridges or tunnels that come under the Tri-borough Bridge and Tunnel Authority.

Westchester County Parkways – If you're cruising around in Westchester County, you can't practice driving on the Cross County, Hutchinson River, Saw Mill River, or Taconic State Parkways. You'll have to find different routes for practice.

DMV Road Test Areas – I would think that these would be an ideal place to learn. But it's kind of cheating, so these areas are for tests only. Don't even think about using them for your practice runs.

Probationary Period for New Drivers

When you get your license restored or pass your road test, you're on probation for six months. That is a great time to pay attention to the road so you don't get tickets for speeding, reckless driving, using an electronic devices while driving, will help you start on the right track.

Under Age 18

If you're under 18, there are more restrictions because of the Graduated Driver License Law. Follow these rules so that you don't miss out on driving on your own 100% legally.
