New York Scores Big on Eco-Friendly Driving
A recent study ranked every state on how “green” their driving habits are, and New York came in at number three in the whole country. They are officially one of the most eco-friendly places to hit the road.
We Don’t Own As Many Cars
One of the biggest reasons we rank so high is that New Yorkers don’t have as many cars as other states. We average about 570 vehicles per 1,000 people, which is way lower than places like Wyoming where it feels like every person owns two trucks.
We’re Not Driving As Much
Another thing working in our favor is how much we actually drive. New Yorkers drive around 9,548 miles a year, which is nothing compared to states where people drive forever just to get groceries.
More New Yorkers Are Going Electric
EVs keep popping up everywhere, and New York is starting to jump on board. We’ve got just over 660 electric cars per 100,000 residents, and that number keeps climbing. Between state incentives and more charging stations, people are feeling more comfortable ditching gas.

Charging Stations Are Easier to Find
Speaking of charging stations, New York has around 90 public chargers per 100,000 people, which makes road trips and daily commutes a lot less stressful for EV drivers. More chargers mean more people willing to give electric cars a try.
Our Emissions Are Lower
New York’s CO₂ emissions from transportation are on the lower side too. We average about 3,770 kilograms per person, which is way better than a lot of other states. That’s thanks to shorter drives, fewer cars, and way more public transit options.
