Southern Tier Disappointed As Crappie Derby Is Canceled
I have some sad news to pass along from Broome County Parks, Recreation, & Youth Services.
The Crappie Derby is a big deal around here and is put on by the Whitney Point Sportsmen's Association. This ice-fishing competition is a Southern Tier favorite, that brings people to our area from all over.
Unfortuanetly, the 2025 Almost-Annual Crappie Derby will not be happening. We are used to The Crappie Derby being canceled because of the weather but that’s not what it is not happening this year.
The organizers of the Crappie Derby said they were pulling the plug because there wasn’t enough ice or sponsorships to keep the event going. Broome County says they stepped up by offering to support the event by covering the insurance expenses. They wanted to do everything that they could to help keep the event going, but that just was not enough to save the day.
The Crappie Derby has always been one of the big highlights in our area and a great way to help winter move along faster. It's a real shame that it won’t be happening this year but here's hoping that we'll see it back in action next year!
We're keeping our fingers crossed and so is Broome County. It looks like the Almost-Annual Crappie Derby is living up to its name again and will have to wait for another year.

By the way, if you’re thinking that it’s been a few years since there was actually a Crappie Derby, you would be right. The last time that the Crappie Derby happened was in 2020.
