New Yorkers Are Searching for Dogs More Than Ever
If you live in New York and have been thinking about getting a dog, you’re not alone. New data shows New Yorkers are searching for dog breeds more than ever. But the study also has an important reminder. Owning a dog is not cheap, and it’s a long term commitment that can last 10 to 15 years.
Owning a Dog Costs More Than You Think
A dog is not just a one time expense. Over its lifetime, a dog can cost anywhere from $25,000 to more than $40,000. That includes food, vet visits, grooming, and pet insurance. Many families don’t think about all of those costs at first.
The Most Searched Dog Breeds in New York
Boxers and Golden Retrievers are tied at the top, with over 40,000 searches each. Australian Shepherds, Chihuahuas, and Dachshunds are close behind. Dachshund searches are growing fast, with a big jump over the last few months.

The Cheapest and Most Expensive Dogs to Own
Not all dogs cost the same over their lifetime. The study found that the Shiba Inu is the least expensive breed to own, with a total cost of about $25,200. On the other end, the French Bulldog is the most expensive dog to own. Over its lifetime, costs can reach more than $40,700. This is mostly due to higher vet bills and insurance costs.
Small Dogs Are Not Always Cheaper
Many people think small dogs cost less, but that’s not always true. A Chihuahua may be small, but it can still cost nearly $29,600 over its lifetime. Dachshunds also cost more than $30,000, even though they are a smaller breed.
Why January Is a Good Time to Plan
January is when many New York families look at their budgets and make plans for the year. It’s also a popular time to adopt or buy puppies. This study is a good reminder to plan ahead before bringing a dog home.
The Bottom Line for New York Dog Lovers
Dogs bring love, fun, and companionship, but they also come with real costs. If you’re thinking about adding a furry four-legged family member, knowing the overall expenses can help you choose the right dog and be ready for the years ahead.
