Late Night Fire Breaks Out Behind Binghamton Gas Station
Just after 1:00 Wednesday morning, Binghamton Fire Department crews were dispatched to the Citgo gas station at 28 Exchange Street after multiple 911 calls reported a large fire behind the building. The call came in at 1:06 a.m., waking up neighbors and sending firefighters out into some seriously cold conditions.
Discovery of Blaze at Citgo Gas Station
When crews arrived, they found a small storage building attached to the back of the gas station fully involved in flames. The fire had also spread into the attic of the main building, so firefighters had to move quickly to keep it from worsening.
Interior Attack Prevents Further Spread
Firefighters knocked down the exterior fire, then forced entry into the building to reach the hidden flames. They removed ceiling tiles and drywall to reach the attic and extinguish the fire that had traveled above the main space. In the end, the damage in the attic was confined to about an 8-foot-by-4-foot section in the peaked area, which helped prevent much more serious damage.

Challenging Winter Conditions Faced by Firefighters
All of this happened while crews were working in single-digit temperatures and icy conditions, making an already dangerous job even tougher. Despite the weather and the intensity of the fire, firefighters were able to get the situation under control without any injuries.
Coordinated Multi-Agency Response
Several agencies assisted on scene, including the Broome County Office of Emergency Services, the Binghamton Police Department, Superior Ambulance Service, Inc., and NYSEG. Their help ensured the area stayed safe and that crews had what they needed to finish the job.

This incident just goes to show the dedication and coordination required to keep the Binghamton community safe, particularly during harsh winter nights.
