There are many great organizations throughout the Southern Tier of New York that young people in our community can be a part of.

One of those organizations is the Vestal Youth Wrestling program. This program is for youth, both boys and girls, from Kindergarten through the sixth grade. The program is coached by volunteers teaching kids the fundamentals of wrestling each week, helping them improve their skills.

Currently, there are 55 youth in the program, which runs from November through April, although many train during the off-season.  According to the organizers, tournaments for this age group include those at Susquehanna Valley, Chenango Valley, Waverly, Owego, Chenango Forks, Maine-Endwell, and Athens.

Some of the wrestlers go on to compete in the Middle Atlantic Wrestling Association Regional Tournament in the spring. Those who are successful at this tournament will qualify for the National Tournament.

According to the organizers, at the end of January, the Green vs Gold Duals are held. Two teams are drafted, and the varsity wrestlers get to coach the youth wrestlers. The lights are dimmed in the gym, with a spotlight on the wrestling mat. This event is a huge highlight for all involved.

The wrestling program incurs numerous expenses, including the purchase of new equipment, facility fees, apparel, training camps, tournament entry fees, and travel costs. The program is funded through community donors and fundraising events throughout the year.

One such fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday, December 20th. Doug's Fish Fry mobile unit will be making a stop at the Tractor Supply parking lot located at 154 Vestal Parkway West, Vestal, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Vestal Youth Wrestling program.
