Get Ready To Spot Birds In The I BIRD NY Challenge

Calling all bird watchers! Guess what has returned? Yes, it's the annual New York State I BIRD NY Challenge.

According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, this challenge runs from March 1st through November 1st, 2026.

So What Exactly Is The Challenge?

The NYS DEC says to use your observation skills and identify any 10 bird species of your choosing in New York State. Those who complete the challenge will receive a commemorative patch and a completion certificate, and will be entered into a drawing for great birding prizes, including spotting scopes and binoculars.

The I BIRD NY challenge is open to all New Yorkers of all ages and abilities. Those participating in this fun challenge can earn a bonus entry into the prize giveaway by submitting a photo documenting their experience completing the I BIRD NY Challenge.

This fun challenge began in 2017 with the goal to increase access to New York's vast natural resources, connect with nature, and promote no-cost and low-cost opportunities while enjoying the Empire State's great outdoors.

Up Your Game, NYS Bird-Watchers!

For those of you who want to up your game by taking this challenge to the next step, the NYS DEC suggests participants identify all 10 birds at a New York State Birding Trail location, or identify 10 species of warblers, waterfowl, etc.

How Do You Enter The I BIRD NY Challenge?

Entries must be received no later than November 18, 2026. Fill out the Challenge Log or download one of the following PDF Forms available in several languages, including:
English, Spanish/Español, Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, French, and Urdu.
