Former Buffalo Sabres Player Comes Out of Retirement

The 2023 NHL playoffs have been extremely entertaining, especially the Oilers and Kings series out in the Western Conference.

The Buffalo Sabres are not part of this year's postseason but had their best regular season since the 2010-2011 season, which was the last time they made the playoffs.

If you remember back in 2011, that was when Terry and Kim Pegula bought the franchise and made significant changes to the roster in the off-season.

The Sabres traded for defenseman Robyn Regehr and signed forward Ville Leino. They also made a trade for the rights of pending free agent, defenseman Christian Ehrhoff.

Ehrhoff signed a 10-year, $40 million contract with the Sabres, which was a huge mistake as the Sabres did not become the team ownership and management thought they would, and Ehrhoff's contract was bought out in the summer of 2014...which Buffalo is still paying as a dead cap figure.

Ehrhoff's career peaked with the San Jose Sharks and Vancouver Canucks, but slowly became a a mediocre defenseman for the remainder of his career. He retired from professional hockey in 2018.

However, the German-born hockey player is coming out of retirement and will be playing for the Krefeld Pinguine of Germany's DEL2 league.

If you talk about the Sabres 12-year playoff drought, the Leino and Ehrhoff signings are talked about as the catalyst for those underperforming teams. Both moves set the franchise back and are considered the two worst contracts in Sabres history.

Those days are long over. The Sabres have nothing but great things ahead with their young stars.
