Ice Skating Rink Coming Soon to Binghamton’s Recreation Park
For the first time in years, people will be able to ice skate at Recreation Park on Binghamton's West Side.
City parks and recreation department workers next week are expected to install a skating rink and a compressor system at the park.
The rink is to be located at the Little League field in the southeast corner of the park off Seminary Avenue.
The city recently received the items needed to build the temporary rink. The equipment was acquired from NiceRink of Wisconsin.
The compressor needed to freeze the water at the rink site is expected to arrive in a few days.
Years ago, parks crews routinely flooded several parks around Binghamton during periods of cold weather to provide ice skating opportunities.
Those operations required a significant amount of work because the ice often would be viable for short periods of time until temperatures rose.
The new rink with the compressor system at Recreation Park should provide usable ice when the air temperature remains below 50 degrees.
Mayor Richard David said he plans to announce details of the park skating rink next week.
