A Binghamton-based credit union is preparing to join forces with a much larger entity that's headquartered in Syracuse.

Members of Horizons Federal Credit Union have approved a plan to merge with Empower Federal Credit Union.

Horizons president and CEO Mario DiFulvio said about 75 percent of the members who voted supported the move.

DiFulvio said the merger is expected to take effect on October 4. Horizon will maintain its identity with signage that will reflect that it is "a division of Empower Federal Credit Union."

The Horizons main office is located at 120 Main Street on Binghamton's West Side. The credit union has branch offices in Vestal and Endwell.

DiFulvio said signs at the Empower branch office on Harry L. Drive in Johnson City will be changed to Horizons with the notation that it is a unit of Empower.

DiFulvio said Horizons has about 12,000 members and employs about 30 people. He said there will be no job losses as the result of the merger.

Horizons was originally know as U.S. Employees Federal Credit Union. The name was changed to Horizons in 1999.
