Several law enforcement agencies are trying to sort through the details of a high speed chase that ran through five Broome County municipalities before racing into Cortland County at speeds over 100 miles per hour early May 25.

The pursuit began at 3:14 a.m. at the WalMart in Johnson City when a person allegedly wanted on a parole violation refused to stop for police and took off in a vehicle.

Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies and municipal police in Johnson City, Vestal and Binghamton were all alerted as the car carrying a man and a woman wound along a path from Lester Avenue to Route 201 to Vestal Road westbound before doubling back on the Vestal Parkway east headed toward Binghamton.  The route then traveled back over Route 201 to State Route 17 east to Interstate 81 north, traveling through the Towns of Dickinson and Chenango, through Castle Creek and Whitney Point before crossing into Cortland County.

At several points, stop sticks were deployed as Broome Sheriff’s officials were joined by units from the New York State Police, Cortland County Sheriff’s and City of Cortland with top speeds reported at 109 miles an hour.

The driver, at one point, reportedly displayed what appeared to be a gun out of a window and turned off the vehicle’s headlights.

Fortunately, there was very little other traffic on the several roads involved in the pursuit.

The last audible report of incident after 4 a.m. put the suspect being chased on foot in the City of Cortland. At 5 a.m. Cortland County Emergency Services officials said they believed the suspect was still at large but later, City of Cortland Police would only say “the investigation is ongoing” and they were unable to comment on whether a suspect was in custody.
