Hawks Soar Under The King

One of the area's greatest athletes continues to make his mark in the coaching ranks.  Binghamton High great King Rice has led his Monmouth Hawks men's basketball team to another upset victory with an 83-68 victory over Georgetown Tuesday, December 15.

The win is the first ever for the Hawks against a Big East team. That ups Monmouth's record to 7-3.  Georgetown is obviously a big win but it is not the only significant victory this season for the Hawks.

Monmouth also owns wins over UCLA, USC and Notre Dame this season. Monmouth is a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Rice has been the head men's basketball coach at Monmouth since 2011.  He was a star with the Binghamton Patriots during the mid-1980's when Binghamton won back-to-back Class A New York State Championships in 1985 and 1986. He was selected as a McDonald's All-American in 1987.

Rice went on to star and start as the point guard for the University of North Carolina from 1988- 1991.  Rice saw action in 140 games for the Tar Heels and was a team captain in the 1990-91 season.  He was inducted into the Greater Binghamton Sports Hall of Fame in April of this year.
