Groundbreaking Planned for New Binghamton Fire Headquarters
Construction crews have started working at the site of the city of Binghamton's planned $7.5 million Court Street fire station.
The new facility will be located between Chapman Street and North Shore Drive.
Workers erected a sign on the project site Wednesday morning while city officials discussed the upcoming construction with representatives of Keystone Associates.
The new station is being built about four blocks east of the temporary fire headquarters, which is located at a former car dealership building at Court and Carroll streets.
The central fire station and administrative offices had been at City Hall for nearly five decades. That facility would have required extensive repair work if the department continued to use it.
Mayor Richard David said the new station will be "safer and healthier" for city firefighters.
The fire headquarters will be located next to an abandoned apartment house which was heavily damaged by a blaze last December.
The property is listed for sale. The mayor said the owner was seeking more money for the site than the city was willing to pay.
