Residents in parts of Western Broome County are being reassured that they are safe after a strong smell of natural gas on October 6th prompted a flurry of 911 calls to Broome County Emergency Services.

Dispatchers say they began getting calls from Endicott, West Corners and Union Center at around 5 p.m. from alarmed residents, 20 from Endicott alone.

Officials say the stronger gas odor was the result of New York State Electric and Gas reportedly having to add more ‘rotten egg smell’ to a gas line that had undergone some work earlier in the day.
