Garnar: Vestal Road Reopening May Occur By Week’s End

A section of Vestal Road that's been closed to westbound traffic for more than three years could be back in service within the next few days.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar on Tuesday said almost all construction related equipment that had blocked the north side of the roadway had been removed.

A large crane remained on Vestal Road but that was expected to be relocated soon.

Garnar said after the crane is moved, the road will be swept off and crews will do necessary patching of the surface.

The county executive said the patching process should take about one day.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Garnar said the needed work at the site may be affected by the weather, especially the heavy rain that's expected on Thursday.

If there are no significant delays, Garnar said the reopening could occur by late Friday and then, he said "Old Vestal Road's nightmare will be over - finally - after about three-and-a-half years."

When the road was closed in May 2016 for work at the Binghamton-Johnson City Sewage Treatment Plant, officials said the detour would be in place for two years.
