The new name of the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena is the Floyd L Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.  The name will be in effect beginning July 1, 2014.  Floyd L Maines, Jr. was born in Binghamton in 1921 and graduated from Binghamton Central High School and Miami University of Ohio.  He joined the Navy and underwent training in the Underwater Demolition Team and was deployed to Europe during World War II.

Floyd L Maines family owns and operates Maines Paper and Food Service with headquarters in Broome County and conducting business in 40 states.  The Maines family has undertaken a partnership with Broome County for naming rights that runs for at least five years and could be extended for an additional three five-year periods.  Maines will pay Broome County $75,000 per year for the life of the agreement.

Sons David and William Maines stated "this is an honor for our father who fought for our country.  He would have been proud to have his name associated with the Veterans Memorial Arena"  County Executive Debbie Preston said a requirement for the naming rights was that Veterans Memorial Arena always be included.  She said the yearly income from the naming rights will go for maintenance, marketing and attracting  more entertainment to the venue.
