The Big Fix: Project to Address Sinking I-81 Bridge in Binghamton
Work to stabilize a bridge that carries thousands of vehicles a day on Interstate 81 through Binghamton is moving forward.
The state Department of Transportation closed several blocks of Chenango Street on the North Side to through traffic nearly three weeks ago for the repair project.
The agency has not publicly released information on exactly what the project entails and how much the job will cost.
It's also not known whether taxpayers will foot the bill to deal with the problem or if the cost will be covered by contractors. The bridge was constructed eight years ago as part of the massive Prospect Mountain project.
The DOT had installed special monitoring equipment to measure what a spokesman described as "uncharacteristic settlement" at the site.
Although Chenango Street is expected to be closed to vehicular traffic under the bridge into December, a sidewalk remains open for pedestrians and bicyclists.
