First Residents Move Into Binghamton’s Canal Plaza Apartments
People now are living in the just-constructed Canal Plaza apartment complex on the North Side of Binghamton.
The $20 million project includes 48 apartments and commercial space. It was built on the site of an abandoned Big Lots store. Residents began moving in on October 1.
Canal Plaza was financed through a range of sources, including state and federal programs.
The complex is located at the intersection of State and North Way streets.
A fenced-in grassy recreation area with playground equipment for young children is located outside the apartment building.
The Binghamton Housing Authority selected applications for the apartments using a lottery process.
Commercial and office space is located on the street level of the complex. A small grocery store is expected to open at the site by the end of the year.
