Work to transform an old Binghamton firehouse from a restaurant into office and retail space is nearing completion.

What had been a second floor dining area for the Number 5 restaurant has been renovated for office use by four tenants. The first floor of the building at South Washington Street and the Vestal Parkway will become a retail store.

Developer Brett Pritchard said the infrastructure is in place for a building being constructed to the east of the former fire station. That structure will house a Mirabito convenience store and coffee shop, along with a Peoples Security Bank & Trust branch office.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Pritchard said the office tenants should be able to occupy the upper level of the old firehouse within a couple of weeks.

While the basic structure of the original fire station remains intact, an addition has been built on the east side of the building with large windows to provide views from the second floor office area.

Construction on the Number 5 Commons project should be completed within a few months. Pritchard then plans to renovate a neighboring South Washington Street building that previously housed the La Tazza coffeehouse.
