One case of the U.K. coronavirus variant now has been identified in Broome County.

County Executive Jason Garnar on Wednesday announced the development, indicating the information was provided by state officials.

In a tweet, Garnar wrote that the development is "another reason we can't let our guard down."

The UK Covid-19 variant has been spreading rapidly in the United States and around the world.

Health experts believe the UK variant poses a greater likelihood of hospitalization and a higher risk of death than other versions of the virus.

Word of the presence of the UK variant came on the same day that Broome County confirmed at least 300 residents have died due to Covid since the pandemic began about one year ago.
