A parole hearing is to be held soon for the man whose vehicle struck and killed 16-year-old Harper Stantz near Binghamton's Recreation Park.

Kevin Wilcox of Harpursville admitted he had been speeding in a Jeep down Beethoven Street while impaired by heroin when the vehicle hit Stantz and 19-year-old Britney Laserinko. They had been walking on the sidewalk shortly after playing tennis on March 11, 2019. Stantz died and Laserinko was critically injured.

Wilcox was sentenced to 5 to 15 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide.

Broome County District Attorney Michael Korchak is opposing Wilcox's bid for parole. In a video posted online, Korchak said although "it is hard to believe," Wilcox will soon be appearing before the state parole board to be considered for release.

Korchak said his office has contacted the board expressing opposition to the possible parole. He said he's encouraging others to contact the parole board to express their views.

Wilcox is serving his sentence in the Wyoming Correctional Facility, a medium-security prison in Attica.

Wilcox is expected to be interviewed by the parole board in November. He could be released as early as March 9.
