A small library in a Broome County hamlet has its sights set on an expansion project just a few years after many feared it would close due to lack of money and few visitors.

The Fenton Free Library in Hillcrest, on Chenango Street has applied for $8,500 through the Broome County Small Communities Initiative.

Voters approved setting up a library district to provide funding for the facility and, since then, attendance has been growing.

Library officials say they now have a need for more space for new programs and community gatherings.

If the facility is approved for county funding, the expansion project could be done over the next two years.
