
Driver Killed in Late-Night Tractor-Trailer Crash on I-88 in Broome County
A late-night crash on Interstate 88 in the Town of Fenton turned deadly Friday, claiming the life of a tractor-trailer driver and prompting hours of emergency response and cleanup.
Emergency Call Comes in Late Friday Night
According to the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the scene around 11:57 p.m. on Friday, January 2, after reports of a single tractor-trailer crash on I-88 near Exit 3.
Tractor-Trailer Found Off the Road Down an Embankment
When first responders arrived, they found the tractor-trailer off the roadway, lying on its side in a drainage ditch along the east side of the highway. The crash had sent the truck down an embankment, making rescue efforts more difficult.

Deputies Attempt Lifesaving Measures at the Scene
Road Patrol deputies broke through the truck’s windshield to reach the driver and immediately began CPR. Emergency medical crews arrived shortly afterward and continued lifesaving efforts, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Driver Identified as Pennsylvania Woman
Authorities identified the driver as 54-year-old Vicky Chadwick of Monessen, Pennsylvania. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Reconstruction Team Details Truck’s Path Before Crash
Preliminary findings from the Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team indicate the tractor-trailer was traveling westbound on I-88 when it drifted from the right lane into the left lane shortly after passing the Exit 3 on ramp. The truck then crossed the center median, went through the eastbound lanes, left the roadway, and rolled onto its side in a drainage ditch. A witness saw the crash unfold and called 911.
Traffic Restricted for Hours During Cleanup
Eastbound traffic on I-88 was reduced to one lane for several hours while crews worked to clear the scene. Cleanup efforts included addressing spilled diesel fuel and antifreeze from the truck. Full traffic flow was restored around 5:30 Saturday morning.

Multiple Agencies Assist at Crash Scene
The Broome County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by several agencies, including the Port Crane Fire Department, Broome Volunteer Emergency Squad, New York State Department of Transportation, Chenango Bridge Fire Department, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Spill Response team.
