New York Governor Kathy Hochul is announcing a flurry of bill-signing over the past couple days after calling the legislature back for an extraordinary session to vote on extending the pandemic eviction moratorium.

The speed of the passage of many of the measures, including the naming of a commission to draw up regulations for the sale and distribution of legal recreation marijuana is drawing some criticism for going too fast.

September 2, the Democrat also signed legislation extending virtual access to public meetings that ended with the expiration of the State Disaster Emergency on June 25. Some legislators, while admitting allowing public meetings to have some business done without a physical presence, could allow a greater number of people a chance to listen in to government meetings, they questioned whether other members of the public, like those with slow or no internet access or those who don’t use computers, would be shut out of the legislative process and proper representation. The lawmakers, again, said taking a little more time would have been beneficial.

Earlier in the week, Hochul announced she had set up a regulatory panel to get the guidance for the sale, taxation and regulation of legal recreational marijuana finally drawn up.  After the passage of legal marijuana over a year ago, the state has not set any of the policies that would allow for the legal sale of the substance, quality of standards or other rules.

Wednesday, September 1, Governor Hochul announced the Senate confirmation of former Assemblywoman and entrepreneur, Tremaine Wright as Chair of the Cannabis Control Board and Queens criminal justice reform advocate, Christopher Alexander as Executive Director of the Office of Cannabis Management.
