Residents Forced Out of Endwell Motel by Early-Morning Fire
Dozens of people were awakened when fire broke out in a room at a motel in the town of Union.
The blaze at the Knights Inn at 2603 East Main Street was reported just before 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.
A woman who was staying in a second-floor room told WNBF News she smelled smoke and woke up her partner and their one-year-old daughter. They made it out of the building safely and reported the fire.
A fire chief on the scene called for a second alarm about 20 minutes after the blaze was reported.
The blaze broke out in a first-floor room that was undergoing construction. A motel representative said no one was staying in the room. He said the fire appeared to be linked to an electric space heater, which may have ignited the carpeting in the room.
Knights Inn night shift manager Tyler Hitchcock said there were about 56 people staying at the motel at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.
Broome County sheriff's deputies and state troopers were sent to the scene. The Red Cross was called to find housing for several people displaced by the fire.
