Endicott’s Felix Roma Bakery Closing After Eight Decades
Felix Roma & Sons Bakery - an Endicott institution since the 1940s - is about to shut down its ovens.
Company owner Gene Roma told WNBF News that employees were advised of the plans to close the business on Thursday morning. The bakery will cease operations on May 27.
Speaking with a reporter outside the company's bakery on South Page Avenue in West Endicott, Roma said: "It's very emotional."
Roma indicated making the decision to shut down the family business was difficult. He said "it's been a process over the last month or so." He declined to discuss specific reasons for closing but said the challenges started by the Covid-19 pandemic were "a relatively big factor."
Roma said he's most concerned for the bakery's workers and customers. He said the company has about 25 employees.
The Felix Roma bakery began on Endicott's North Side. For decades, the company produced bread, rolls and other baked goods at a facility on Squires Avenue.
The bakery built a large production plant at 2 South Page Avenue in 1969. With business booming, the facility was expanded three years later.
For decades, Felix Roma operated a small retail outlet at its West Endicott bakery, selling pizza, bread and other items. But the shop was closed due to the pandemic and it never reopened.
Felix Roma products are sold in many grocery stores and are used by restaurants across New York state.
In a brief statement, the company said: "We would like to take this opportunity to give heartfelt thanks to all our customers, past and present. Thank you Triple Cities, and the Southern Tier, for the privilege of serving you for the past 75 years plus."
