Binghamton fire officials report extensive damage to a three-story apartment house on the west side after fire broke out early May 8.

The two-alarm fire at 193 Matthews Street was reported just before 3:30 a.m. with initial reports of several people inside the building.

The structure, that reportedly was three stories in the front and two stories in the back is located between Grand Boulevard and Main Street.

Authorities report heavy fire damage to the second and third floors with some water and smoke damage to part of the first floor but said it's believed the building can be saved.

The number of people displaced by the blaze was not available and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

At least two people are believed to have been transported to the hospital by ambulance and three ambulances were called to the scene.
