Many may have seen reports that Front Street has reopened but early morning motorists June 14 coming into Binghamton from Route 17 found themselves still being detoured through sleeping First Ward neighborhoods.

The multi-million dollar reconstruction of one of the main roads into the downtown area has been in the works for ten years with construction detours put into place in phases over the past couple of years.

While motorists, residents and businesses agree that the Gateway needed to be made more attractive and safer with improved road conditions, the construction work has been a trial.  Businesses, most notably, being impacted with a loss of patrons.

The $6-million project still needs to have the stripes painted on the road, signs installed and other finishing touches made before the work is really complete.
