Dollar General Set to Open Three New Broome and Tioga Stores
A Tennessee-based retailer is continuing to expand its presence in the Southern Tier.
Dollar General is preparing to open at least three new stores in Broome and Tioga counties.
The company already operates about 20,000 stores in the United States and Mexico. Dollar General last spring said it planned to open more than 1,000 new locations this year.
The Johnson City village planning board approved a site plan for a new store at 185 Main Street just over a month ago.
The building at one point housed the Safari Pets store. Renovations at the site began immediately after the approval vote.
Coolers are expected to be delivered to the store next week and the place likely will be open by the end of the month. An existing Dollar General store at 222 Main Street will be closed.
Construction of a 10,640-square-foot building for a Dollar General unit at 6946 Route 17C in Campville is nearing completion.
A developer told the town of Owego planning board that the new Campville store will feature more food and coolers than other nearby Dollar General stores.
Although several nearby residents expressed opposition to the project for a range of reasons, the plans were approved by the board. The store is expected to open in October.
In western Tioga County, Dollar General is moving forward with its plans to build another store on Route 34 in the town of Barton. Some concerns about potential flooding have been expressed about that project.
