The Broome County Industrial Development Agency is reviewing a plan aimed at transforming the Oakdale Mall in Johnson City into a multi-use complex.

At an IDA meeting, Doug Matthews of Spark JC LLC discussed some aspects of a proposal that could dramatically redesign what has been a regional shopping center for more than four decades.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar said Matthews is looking to redevelop the mall in a similar fashion to what's being done with the former Sears store at the site.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Garnar said Matthews is "going after some very big companies that would result in a lot of jobs coming to the mall."

The county executive said the project could mean "potentially well over a thousand new jobs" coming to the site.

Garnar said he views the Oakdale Mall as the "most important real estate asset right now in Broome County."

The Johnson City village board has authorized the IDA to consider the developer's application for a payment in lieu of taxes for the project, which may be called "Oakdale Commons."

Garnar said he's "really, really excited about the potential" for the proposed redevelopment project.
