Demolition Crews Take Down Historic Vestal Church
A church building that had been a fixture in a Vestal neighborhood for several decades has been torn down.
Workers from Gorick Construction showed up early Tuesday morning to start demolishing the structure at the corner of Owego Road and Arlington Avenue in Ross Corners. The site is one block south of the Vestal Parkway.
The building had been acquired by the Binghamton Chinese Christian Church from the United Pentecostal Church in June 2021.
For many decades, the building was used by the Vestal Baptist Church. Members of the church constructed an addition to the original structure in 1951.
Pastor George Lee of the Binghamton Chinese Christian Church said a new building is planned for the site where the old one had stood.
Lee told WNBF News the church now has about 20 active members. For now, they'll gather in a nearby home for worship services.
Many people stopped to watch the demolition operation on Tuesday. One man said he had been baptized in that church.
