The list of closed CVS Pharmacy locations in the Binghamton area is about to get longer as the company plans to shut down another local store.

The Rhode Island-based company's retrenchment program in Broome County began five years ago. CVS closed a neighborhood pharmacy at 68 Main Street on Binghamton's West Side in January 2019.

WNBF News has learned that the next area store to be shuttered is on the city's South Side.

Employees of the CVS Pharmacy at 50 Pennsylvania Avenue have confirmed the store is scheduled to be closed on May 21. No signs have been posted informing customers of the planned shutdown. Workers were advised of the closing last Saturday.

In an email Wednesday, CVS spokesperson Amy Thibault said all prescriptions from the Pennsylvania Avenue location will be transferred to the company's store at 249 Main Street on Binghamton's West Side.

The Pennsylvania Avenue store opened nearly three decades ago. It's located next door to a Weis supermarket.

An employee said the CVS store was being closed for "a multitude of reasons." When asked whether shoplifting was one of the reasons for the decision, he indicated it was a factor.

CVS workers at other Broome County stores that have been closed in recent years also have said shoplifting has contributed to the shutdowns.

When WNBF News reported that was an issue in the 2022 closing of the CVS store on West State Street in Binghamton, Thibault emailed a statement saying "shoplifting was not a factor in our decision." She cited various other factors for the closing.

In November 2021, CVS closed its downtown Binghamton store at 34 Court Street. The CVS store at 345 Main Street in Johnson City was shut down in May 2022.

Responding to an inquiry from WNBF News, Thibault would not say what other stores in the region are going to be closed in coming months. In an email, she wrote: "We don't provide lists of store closures."

LOOK: Here are the 50 best beach towns in America

Every beach town has its share of pluses and minuses, which got us thinking about what makes a beach town the best one to live in. To find out, Stacker consulted data from WalletHub, released June 17, 2020, that compares U.S. beach towns. Ratings are based on six categories: affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and quality of life. The cities ranged in population from 10,000 to 150,000, but they had to have at least one local beach listed on TripAdvisor. Read the full methodology here. From those rankings, we selected the top 50. Readers who live in California and Florida will be unsurprised to learn that many of towns featured here are in one of those two states.

Keep reading to see if your favorite beach town made the cut.
