Cuomo Declares “Gun Violence Disaster Emergency” in New York
Governor Andrew Cuomo says he's ready to fight what he calls a "new epidemic of gun violence" in New York state.
Cuomo on Tuesday issued an executive order declaring gun violence a disaster emergency.
The governor said the move is part of a new strategy "that treats the problem as a public health crisis."
Cuomo said additional efforts will be taken to get illegal guns off New York streets.
A new state police gun interdiction unit is being created to try to address the flow of weapons from other states.
The governor said an Office of Gun Violence Prevention will track reported shootings across the state to identify "hot spots" where action needs to be taken.
