Congressional Campaign: Cornwell Prepares to Challenge Brindisi

Six months after revealing he would not seek reelection, Broome County District Attorney Stephen Cornwell is about to launch a campaign for Congress.

Cornwell plans to announce his campaign for the Republican nomination in the 22nd District on Tuesday in downtown Binghamton.

When he informed Broome County residents last January that he would leave the DA's office at the end of the year, speculation began about his political future.

In an interview on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Cornwell was asked whether he would try to challenge Democratic Congressman Anthony Brindisi.

Cornwell said "I'm not ruling anything out right now." He said if "people were willing to support me and wanted me to do that, then obviously I've got to take a serious, serious look at that."

At the end of the interview, Cornwell said: "I only want to run if the people want me to run."

Two other Broome County men, George Phillips and Franklin Sager, also have said they are seeking the Republican nomination in the 22nd District.
