State environmental officials say significant progress has been made in cleaning up the chemical contamination around the former IBM Endicott manufacturing site.

The Department of Environmental Conservation provided an update on the remediation project at a public meeting Thursday evening.

Officials say they are recommending a continuation of cleanup operations in the village of Endicott.

IBM won't explain how industrial solvents used at the company's massive manufacturing complex over several decades wound up polluting the site and surrounding neighborhoods.

The company has been paying for efforts to address the problems related to what's been designated as a state Superfund site.

Hundreds of Endicott homes and businesses near the old factory property have been equipped with ventilation systems designed to reduce potential health effects from chemicals.

The DEC this month is accepting public comment on the proposed cleanup plans before taking additional action.
