Chenango Bridge is the Latest Community Without a Bank Branch
The Citizens Bank branch in Chenango Bridge has closed its doors as the national trend of fewer bank offices continues.
The Rhode Island-based company shut down the local office at 603 River Road on November 10.
In a statement, Citizens Bank spokesman Bennett Griesmer said: "Customers will continue to be served through neighboring branches and ATMs, including our Binghamton West branch, approximately 7 miles away, located at 247 Main Street, Binghamton, NY 13905 as well as our online and mobile banking platforms."
A woman who showed up at the branch Monday was surprised when she read the sign that the office was closed. She said she was disappointed that she would have to drive to Binghamton's West Side to make a deposit.
The phone number for the Chenango Bridge branch remained in operation on Tuesday with a recorded message still providing hours and no announcement that the office closed several days ago.
Bankers Trust opened a branch at the River Road site in November 1974. The office was used by Key Bank and Charter One Bank before it became a Citizens Bank branch.
Citizens Bank and other banks have been reducing the number of branch locations in recent years. Citizens Bank also closed a branch in Glens Falls this month.
Citizens Bank shut down a branch at 84 Court Street in downtown Binghamton in 2016. The company closed its Washington Avenue office in September and opened a much smaller branch nearby.
