On behalf of the men and women of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, our hearts remain with the family of Chelsey Davis during this incredibly difficult time. This was the first death our administration had encountered, but I hope Chelsey’s family can find some comfort in knowing that our medical and correctional staff performed admirably and with vigilance, doing everything they could to save Chelsey’s life. We have remained in contact with Chelsey’s family throughout this investigation, and we are grateful for their approval to release the results. We also thank the community for their patience as we strive to be as transparent as possible, while also respecting the family’s wishes during these heartbreaking circumstances. - Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar
The Broome County Sheriff's Office notes that the toxicology report found no alcohol or controlled substances in her system at the time of her death. No clinical or administrative malfeasance by the corrections or medical staff after an internal investigation at the Broome County Correctional Facility, and an investigation from the NYS Office of the Attorney General.
The family of Chelsey Davis also released a statement:
Chelsey’s tragic death stemmed from emotional trauma and a resulting depression that led to chronic alcohol abuse. Our family prays that the community respects our privacy during this difficult time.
The Broome County Sheriff's Office recounted that on October 8, 2025, Davis was remanded to the Broome County Correctional Facility by the Town of Chenango Court.
Following standard booking procedures, Davis received a full medical and substance abuse screening with the Correctional Facility medical staff before being housed in the Medical Unit at the Facility.
Over the next several hours, Davis was seen by medical staff two additional times, finding Davis responsive and not exhibiting any issues to indicate a medical emergency.
Twenty minutes after the third visit with medical staff, Davis experienced a medical emergency, and Corrections and Medical staff responded, administered CPR and an AED, but were unable to revive her.
