Authorities say it appears squatters were using a vacant, three-story apartment house on Columbus Park East in the City of Binghamton when fire broke out early on March 1.

There were no reports of injuries but the structure sustained heavy damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The blaze was reported at around 1:30 in the morning and crews quickly had it under control but not before flames shot up the front of the building and could be seen through the roof.

Authorities say the structure had been vacant for several years.
