A team of Binghamton University students has place first in a national competition with an automated system to address trees and other plants that create runway obstructions.

The team says aviation obstructions like buildings and towers are permanent and documented, but fast-growing plants are not.

The team is presenting its design to the National Academies Keck Center and the Airport Consultants Council in Washington, DC on July 17.
