Binghamton police and firefighters were sent to the Broome County Department of Social Services building after a "suspicious item" was discovered.

According to a statement released by the county, the item was found around 1:40 p.m. Tuesday at the facility which is located at 36 Main Street. The building is across the street from Binghamton High School.

It was not known how many people were inside the complex when the evacuation was ordered. There were no reports of injuries.

The county statement indicated there was "no immediate danger to the public."

Binghamton fire department supervisors declined to comment on what was found. Members of a city hazmat team left the scene around 3:30 p.m.

Binghamton police detective Captain John Ryan said patrol officers and detectives responded to the scene to assist firefighters. He said the investigation was turned over the county security division.

The building is expected to be open as normal on Wednesday.
