Broome COVID Numbers Take Big Single-Day Leap
Broome County is reporting a huge single-day jump in COVID-19 cases with 97 new positive test results announced September 1. Broome now has 19,674 cases since the start of the pandemic. Of the cases reported September 1, 576 were active cases and 21 residents were in the hospital with COVID-19.
Chenango County August 31 reported another pandemic fatality bringing the death toll there to 82. There were fifteen new cases in Chenango County reported September 1 and 25 new cases in Cortland County. Delaware County had 54 new cases last week. The next update was scheduled for the end of the day September 2.
Earlier this week, Broome County Executive Jason Garnar told reporters that the age of those infected with the coronavirus, mainly the Delta variant, is lower than those who were getting sick a year ago. Garnar says about 48 percent were under the age of 30, almost 40 percent under the age of 24 and 20 percent under the age of 18.
Most of the new infections and the hospitalizations are in people who are not vaccinated against COVID1-19. Of course, the vaccine is not approved for children under the age of 12 at this time.
